Hamburg → Zurich: vignettes & tolls
The vignettes below cover the mainstream motorway route. Prices are the cheapest short-term option per country, at official rates.
Hamburg – Hanover – Frankfurt – Basel – Zurich runs the length of the German A7/A5 before a short hop into Switzerland, a popular route for northern German business travel and relocation to Zurich. Traffic around Frankfurt and the Swiss border at Basel is the main source of delay.
Tips & tricks
- ✓Buy the Swiss vignette before crossing at Basel — it is required for any use of Swiss motorways, even a short transit of a few kilometers, and roadside checks carry a CHF 200 fine.
- ✓The physical sticker must be affixed directly to the windshield — a loose or misapplied vignette is treated as invalid at Swiss checkpoints, so buy the digital e-vignette instead if in doubt.
On the road — good to know
- •The A7 climbs through the hills south of Kassel around Sandershäuser Berg, a stretch notorious for slow trucks and pile-ups whenever traffic is heavy or the weather turns bad.
- •The Hattenbacher Dreieck, where the A5 splits off toward Frankfurt, is a classic bottleneck on this corridor — worth checking live traffic before committing to the A7 versus A5 fork.
- •At the Basel border into Switzerland, keep to the green 'nothing to declare' lane if you're under the duty-free goods allowance of CHF 150; staffed crossings still run spot checks since Switzerland sits outside the EU customs union despite being in Schengen.
- •Diesel in Switzerland tends to run noticeably pricier than in Germany, so it's worth filling up one last time on the German side around Basel before crossing rather than searching for a Swiss Tankstelle.
Watch out for
- 🇨🇭The vignette is required for any use of Swiss motorways, even a few kilometers of transit, and roadside checks fine unvignetted cars CHF 200 on the spot.
