Munich → Sofia: vignettes & tolls
The vignettes below cover the mainstream motorway route. Prices are the cheapest short-term option per country, at official rates.
Munich – Salzburg – Vienna – Budapest – Belgrade – Sofia runs on Austrian and Hungarian motorways before the Serbian expressway network. It is a long single-day push for experienced drivers, or an easy two-day trip with an overnight near Belgrade.
Tips & tricks
- ✓Austria's 10-day digital vignette is the right product for this trip — the annual sticker only pays off above roughly two months of use.
- ✓The Hungarian e-matrica is strictly plate-bound with no grace for typos — enter the plate exactly as on the registration document, including any spaces.
On the road — good to know
- •The stretch through Austria brings its own alpine section tolls on top of the vignette, so budget an extra 8 to 18 euros for tunnels like Karawanken depending on exactly which pass you take.
- •Diesel and petrol get progressively cheaper the further southeast you drive, with Serbia typically undercutting both Austria and Hungary, so it's worth timing fill-ups for after each border rather than before.
- •This is the shortest of the four routes at roughly 1450 km, but the final approach still funnels through the Kalotina–Gradina crossing shared with all Sofia and Istanbul-bound traffic, so it inherits the same border queues.
Watch out for
- 🇦🇹The vignette does not cover Sondermaut sections like the Brenner or Tauern tunnels — drivers who only buy the vignette get fined at those separate toll points.
- 🇭🇺The e-matrica is strictly plate-bound with zero tolerance for typos, so a single wrong character when entering the plate means driving with no valid vignette at all.
- 🇧🇬Cars need the sticker-style vignette while trucks pay a separate distance-based toll, and drivers often assume the wrong system applies to their vehicle.
