Munich → Zagreb: vignettes & tolls
The vignettes below cover the mainstream motorway route. Prices are the cheapest short-term option per country, at official rates.
Munich – Salzburg – Villach – Ljubljana – Zagreb runs mostly on the A10/A11 in Austria and the A1 in Slovenia, a compact route popular for weekend trips to the Adriatic. Slovenia's stretch is short but requires its own vignette even for a quick transit.
Tips & tricks
- ✓The Slovenian e-vinjeta is strictly plate- and vehicle-class-bound — buying the wrong category (e.g. car instead of car-with-trailer) invalidates it even if you paid.
- ✓Even a same-day transit through Slovenia needs the vignette — there is no free corridor exception, unlike some short hops through Austria.
On the road — good to know
- •The Karawanken tunnel between Villach and Ljubljana carries about 30,000 vehicles a day at summer peak, and its notorious queues once stretched to 14 hours before a second tube opened in March 2026 to ease the crunch.
- •The alternative via Graz and Maribor avoids the tunnel toll but adds distance, and it crosses Styria's hillier back roads where slower agricultural traffic can bunch up behind you.
- •Austria's IG-L environmental limit drops the A10 and A11 to 100 km/h on marked stretches, and fines for ignoring it are treated as pollution penalties, running into the thousands of euros rather than a normal speeding ticket.
- •Slovenian fuel is usually noticeably cheaper than in Austria or Italy, so many drivers on this route top up the tank right after crossing at Karawanken or Šentilj.
Watch out for
- 🇦🇹The vignette does not cover Sondermaut sections like the Brenner or Tauern tunnels — drivers who only buy the vignette get fined at those separate toll points.
- 🇸🇮The e-vinjeta is bound to both the plate and the exact vehicle class, so buying the wrong category — such as car instead of car-with-trailer — invalidates it even after payment.
