Vienna → Bucharest: vignettes & tolls
The vignettes below cover the mainstream motorway route. Prices are the cheapest short-term option per country, at official rates.
Vienna – Budapest – Arad – Bucharest runs on the M1/M43 in Hungary and the A1 in Romania, with a shorter national-road stretch around Arad. It is a common corridor for Romanian workers commuting home and can be done comfortably in one long day.
Tips & tricks
- ✓Buy the Romanian rovinieta before crossing — enforcement is by roadside cameras, and fines for driving without one often arrive by post months later.
- ✓The Hungarian e-matrica is needed even for this short hop through Hungary — a 1-day or weekly pass is enough, no need for the monthly one.
On the road — good to know
- •Past Sibiu the A1 motorway simply stops and traffic drops onto the DN7 national road toward Pitești — a slow, truck-heavy stretch through the Olt valley that locals have nicknamed the "missing link."
- •On the Hungarian side, the M1 between Budapest and Győr is being widened to six lanes, so expect lane closures and rolling roadworks well into the late 2020s before the run to the Austrian border smooths out.
- •Once you're on Romanian national roads, watch for horse-drawn carts and tractors sharing the lane, especially around Transylvanian villages — it's a normal sight, not an emergency.
- •The finished Boița–Curtea de Argeș motorway pieces already opened cut real time off the trip, and Romanian officials keep pushing the full Sibiu–Pitești link toward a 2028–2030 completion window.
Watch out for
- 🇭🇺The e-matrica is strictly plate-bound with zero tolerance for typos, so a single wrong character when entering the plate means driving with no valid vignette at all.
- 🇷🇴The rovinieta is checked by automatic roadside cameras rather than physical booths, so fines for driving without one often arrive by post weeks or months after the trip.
