Munich – Salzburg – Vienna – Budapest – Arad – Bucharest strings together Austrian, Hungarian and Romanian motorways with one shorter national-road section near Arad. It is a long haul often split into two days, popular with Romanian and Moldovan diaspora driving back from Germany.

• •This route stacks both Austrian and Hungarian bottlenecks: the A10 Tauern corridor backs up before its tunnels in summer, then the M1 widening works near Győr add a second slowdown before Budapest.
• •At roughly 1,550 km this is the longest of the five routes, so most drivers split it with an overnight stop around Budapest or Arad rather than pushing through in one go.
• •Fuel is worth timing: prices in Austria and Germany usually run noticeably higher than in Hungary and Romania, so many drivers fill up right after crossing into Hungary.

Watch out for
