Munich → Bucharest: vignettes & tolls
The vignettes below cover the mainstream motorway route. Prices are the cheapest short-term option per country, at official rates.
Munich – Salzburg – Vienna – Budapest – Arad – Bucharest strings together Austrian, Hungarian and Romanian motorways with one shorter national-road section near Arad. It is a long haul often split into two days, popular with Romanian and Moldovan diaspora driving back from Germany.
Tips & tricks
- ✓Stack the Austrian 10-day vignette with the Hungarian and Romanian ones before departure — all three are available online and take only minutes each.
- ✓The Nickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom crossing from Austria to Hungary can back up on Friday afternoons in summer — an early start avoids the worst of it.
On the road — good to know
- •This route stacks both Austrian and Hungarian bottlenecks: the A10 Tauern corridor backs up before its tunnels in summer, then the M1 widening works near Győr add a second slowdown before Budapest.
- •At roughly 1,550 km this is the longest of the five routes, so most drivers split it with an overnight stop around Budapest or Arad rather than pushing through in one go.
- •Fuel is worth timing: prices in Austria and Germany usually run noticeably higher than in Hungary and Romania, so many drivers fill up right after crossing into Hungary.
Watch out for
- 🇦🇹The vignette does not cover Sondermaut sections like the Brenner or Tauern tunnels — drivers who only buy the vignette get fined at those separate toll points.
- 🇭🇺The e-matrica is strictly plate-bound with zero tolerance for typos, so a single wrong character when entering the plate means driving with no valid vignette at all.
- 🇷🇴The rovinieta is checked by automatic roadside cameras rather than physical booths, so fines for driving without one often arrive by post weeks or months after the trip.
